Le Mars Daily SentinelLaVern R. Pageler, 88, of rural Merrill, died Monday, May 9, 2011, at Touchstone Living Center in Sioux City.
LaVern Roy Pageler was born Dec. 16, 1922, in Wessington Springs, S.D., the son of Henry W. and Lillian (Thormahlen) Pageler. On March 1, 1933 LaVern and his family moved to Union Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. LaVern attended Union Consolidated School, graduating in 1941.
On Aug. 30, 1946, LaVern and Martha Bunge were united in marriage at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Le Mars, where Martha's father, the Rev. Franz O. Bunge, presided over the service.
The couple farmed in Stanton and Marion Township in Plymouth County for many years. In 1981, LaVern and Martha moved to the family farm near Merrill.
Martha died Jan. 21, 2007.
LaVern remained on the farm until moving to Touchstone Living Center in Sioux City, May 13, 2010.
LaVern was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He ushered for 67 years, kept the Sunday School records for 64 years, and served seven years on the church council. Along with his own farming operation, LaVern performed custom farming and operated Pageler's repair from his farm. He was also an Archer Oil dealer and a McCurdy Seed dealer.
LaVern will be lovingly remembered by his two sons, Evan Pageler and his wife, Janice, of Georgetown, Texas and Loren Pageler of Le Mars; grandchildren, Timothy Pageler and his wife, Bevyn, of Cedar Park, Texas, Stephen Pageler and his wife, Lisa, of Newton; great-grandchildren, Tessa Hope Pageler and Ethan James Pageler; a foster sister Beverly (Schuette) Lilly of Sioux City and her five children; a sister-in-law, Esther Meyer of Mesa, Ariz.; and a brother-in-law, Roland Bunge and his wife, Claire, of Nacogdoches, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; brothers in-law and sisters-in-law, Victor and Erma Bunge, Martin Bunge and William Meyer.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 1 p.m. Friday at the church.
