George A. Bottjen, 63, of rural Remsen, died Thursday (June 4, 1987) at Sioux City St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Mr. Bottjen was at the hospital for one day where he underwent surgery June 3 [June 4].
Funeral was at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at Christ Lutheran Church with Rev. Lee Mentink officiating. Burial was in Remsen City Cemetery. A prayer service was held at the church prior to the funeral. Visitation was from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. Bottjen was born March 3, 1924, at Moville to George and Minnie (Burow) Bottjen Sr.

George Bottjen was reared on his family’s farm near Remsen [Moville] and he continued to farm his entire life. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II, serving in the European Theater, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He married the former Helen Maass June 4, 1947, at Christ Lutheran Church at Remsen. Mr. Bottjen died on the couple’s 40th wedding anniversary.

Survivors are his wife, Helen, of Remsen; a son, David [Dan] of New Bern, N.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Dean (Linda) Mohning of Remsen and Mrs. Robert (Karen) Hoyt of Marion; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Rumohr and Mrs. Edna Rumohr, both of Le Mars; and six brothers, Harry of Remsen, Albert and John of Kingsley, Carl of Hawarden, Elzie of Moville and Cecil of Sioux City.
