Michael “Mitch” Powell, 56, of Le Mars died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the Abbey in Le Mars.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with Reverend Jon Meridith of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, Iowa. Visitations will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time Thursday morning at the funeral home.
Michael David Powell was born August 25, 1954 in Primghar, Iowa to Michael T. and Beverly R. (Kimmel) Powell. Mitch as he was known by his family and friends, graduated from East High School in Rusk, Texas in 1972. He later attended and graduated from Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City, Iowa in 1976. Mitch had lived and worked as a welder in Houston and Tyler, Texas as well as in Washington. In the late 1990’s, Mitch moved to Le Mars and later began working at the Can Farm in 1999 until December of 2010. Mitch was united in marriage to Robin Jammerthal on June 18, 2007.
Mitch loved his family and friends. He was a very accomplished musician; having taught himself to play several instruments. Through the years, Mitch had played with several bands.
Survivors include his wife Robin of Le Mars; his father, Michael Taylor Powell and his wife Mary of Newport, Washington; 2 sons, Josh Powell of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Micah Riffey of Sioux City, Iowa; 3 stepsons, Nathan Hemmingsen of Sioux City, Nicholas Hemmingsen of Akron, IA, and Austin Hemmingsen of Sioux Falls, SD; a brother, Greg (Joni) Powell of Blanchard, ID; 2 sisters, Kathleen (Teddy) Bearden of Berryville, TX and Mary Jo Powell of Spokane, WA; 2 grandchildren, Lane and Pacey Riffey of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and step father, Beverly and Larry O’Neil.
