ARTHUR PHILIPS, LIFELONG COUNTY RESIDENT, DEAD AT 80

Arthur Emanuel Philips, 80, Merrill, lifetime Plymouth County resident and retired farmer, died Tuesday (Aug. 24, 1976) at St. Luke hospital, Sioux City, after an illness of several months. He had lived in Sioux City visitors six weeks.

Mr. Philips was born May 8, 1896, in Plymouth County to Samuel D. and Katherine Wienrich Philips. He was a farmer in Liberty township and retired in 1974.

His marriage to Frances Friske took place Jan. 21, 1920, in Plymouth County. She preceded him in death in 1973.

Lenore Rush Spies and Mr. Philips were married Oct. 11, 1975, at Merrill Adaville United Methodist church.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Hinton United Methodist church with Rev. E. J. Berreth officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, under the direction of the Mauer Funeral Home, LeMars.

A prayer service will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lenore Philips, Merrill, and a son Lowell of Merrill; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Delores) Kovarna, rural Merrill; two grandsons and a great grandson.

Also surviving are five stepchildren, Gordon Spies, Pomona, Calif., and Wayne Spies, Hinton; Mrs. Vernon Farmer, Brunsville; Mrs. Floyd Hartman, Merrill and Mrs. Don Arndt, Hinton; eight step-grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; three brothers, Chester and Elmer Philips, LeMars, and William Philips, Akron and two sisters, Mrs. Esther Brown, rural Merrill and Mrs. Ralph (Mildred) Gabel, LeMars.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie.

Mr. Philips was a member of Hinton United Methodist church. Merrill Oleson-Halweg Legion post and World War I barracks 1507.
