Olivene Bales
(May 2, 1922 - February 16, 2010)

Kingsley, Iowa – Olivene Bales, 87, of Kingsley, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at the Touchstone Living Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 2010, at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley with Chaplain Kay Morrissey of Hospice of Siouxland officiating. Interment will be in the Kingsley City Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Olivene Bales, the daughter of Martha Estle (Brock) and Grover Cleveland Hawkins, was born on May 2, 1922, in Norborne, Missouri. She graduated from Stet High School in Stet, MO. Olivene was united in marriage to Eldred Miller Bales on June 28, 1942 in Stet, MO. They became the proud and busy parents of five sons.

Some of Olivene’s interests and hobbies included vegetable and flower gardening, playing board games, sewing, reading magazines, creating craft projects, cooking, and baking. Her family recalls that she made delicious chocolate peppermint cookies, birthday cakes, and donuts. Tending to her family was her greatest joy and priority. When Olivene demanded a son’s immediate attention, it was gained with a stern voice and the use of their first and middle names. For the past several years, Olivene resided at Char-Mac Assisted Living in Lawton. Olivene will be dearly missed by all who have shared in her life.

She is survived by her five sons, Donald “Red” and Timi Bales of Pomeroy, IA, Larry and Jill Bales of Griswold, IA, Keith and Pam Bales of Sioux City, IA, Dale and Maria Bales of Indianola, IA, and Greg and Anne Bales of Hemlock, MI; her sister, Viola Miller of Chillicothe, MO; her brother, Kenneth and Velma Hawkins of Kansas City, MO; her brother-in-law, Ray Francis and Willie Bales of Stet, MO; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Olivene in death is her husband, Eldred in August of 1999; her parents, Grover and Martha Hawkins; her sister, Wilma Eickmann, and her two brothers, Orville and Virgil Hawkins.
