(Died August 21, 2006)MARCUS, IOWA: Donald Walter Alesch, 71, of Marcus, died Monday, August 21, 2006, at the Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2006, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, Iowa, with Rev. Eugene Murray officiating. Burial will be at Holy Name Cemetery in Marcus, with military graveside services provided by American Legion F. I. Goodburn Post 517 of Marcus, Iowa. Visitation begins after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, with a Rosary at 3:00 p.m. , with the family present 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and a Wake Scripture service at 7:00 p.m. all at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, Iowa. The Earnest ~ Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus, Iowa, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Don was born January 22, 1935, in rural Marcus, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Braun) Alesch. He was raised in the Marcus area graduating from Holy Name High School in Marcus in 1952. He served in the U. S. Army from 1954 until 1956 during which part of the time he was stationed in Germany.
He married Carol Lee Collins on July 26, 1961 in Marcus. Don was a self-employed farmer on the farm he was born and raised on in rural Marcus. In 1997 Don retired from farming and continued to live on the farm until March of 2004 at which time he went to Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, Iowa.
He was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church, enjoyed farming, fishing, gardening, bowling, golfing and was avid sports fan. He especially devoted to the Green Bay Packers and the Fighting Irish of Norte Dame.
Survivors include his wife, Carol of Marcus, two daughters, Donna Estephan and her husband, Jacques of Katy, Texas, and Sally Oltmanns and her husband, Kevin of Windom, Minnesota, four sons, Joseph Alesch and his wife Rae Anne of Marcus, Iowa, Patrick Alesch of Marcus, Iowa, Michael Alesch of Melvin, Iowa, and Martyn Alesch of Marcus, Iowa. Don has eight grandchildren, Emma and Anna Estephan, Brett Oltmanns, Seph, Kelsey and Chandler Alesch and Bryce and Brooke Alesch, one brother-in-law, Leon and Ardis Collins of Lake Park, Iowa, two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Newberg of Alcester, South Dakota and Kaye Antrim and her husband Lyle of Montrose, South Dakota. Also, surviving are several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Josephine Alesch, two sisters, Colette Briggs and Marilyn Betz, and two brothers-in-law, Rusty Briggs and William Betz.
