Marcus, Iowa - Anna Elizabeth “Liz” Hartle, 84, of Marcus, Iowa passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa. A Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home of Marcus, Iowa. Rev. Liz Pfeifle will officiate. Burial will follow at Marcus-Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Anna Elizabeth Benson was born on January 15, 1925 in Woburn, Massachusetts, the daughter of Werner and Esther (Persson) Benson. She was raised and attended school in Marcus. After her education, Liz went to work at the telephone company in Le Mars, Iowa. She would later work at a gas station and the medical clinic in Le Mars.

On August 7, 1959 Liz and Eugene Lyman Hartle were united in marriage in Marcus. The couple made their home in Rochester, Minnesota where Liz worked at a local medical clinic. Liz and Eugene then attended beauty school and opened their own beauty salon in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1966 they returned to Marcus to care for Liz’s mother.

Liz was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus. She enjoyed visiting with neighbors and working in her yard.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Anna May Von Behren and her husband Dan of Perry, Iowa; grandsons Matthew and Brandon; a brother Paul Benson of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and close friends Dr. Jim and Clarice Wiese, Paul and Shirley Shea, and Vernon and Rhoda Grauer all of Marcus, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Eugene on October 16, 1986; and a brother Bertil Benson.
