Dorothy Evelyn Ohlrichs Dirks, 86, of Hawarden, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

Dorothy Evelyn Ohlrichs Dirks was born Sept. 4, 1924, on the family farm near Merrill, the daughter of John and Katherine (Borchers) Ohlrichs. She was baptized Sept. 20, 1924, and confirmed April 10, 1938, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Johnson Township.

Dorothy attended rural school near her home at Plymouth #5 and graduated from Le Mars High School in 1942. She did housework for Mr. and Mrs. Walter Spire and Mr. and Mrs. Al Meis and was employed at the B & B 5 &10 cent store. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at Barney Millers Plumbing in Le Mars, Plymouth Creamery in Le Mars, Firestone Tire and Retread in Sioux City and the Old Home Bakery as a billing clerk.

On June 23, 1948, Leonard G. Dirks and Dorothy were united in marriage at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. They made their home in Merrill and on farms at West Akron, S.D., and a farm west of Le Mars. They retired to Hawarden in February, 1984.

Dorothy enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafts, gardening, playing cards and baking and decorating cakes.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden and was a member of the ladies aid, holding several offices there.

Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her two sons and their wives, Dennis and Peggy Dirks of Le Mars and Dwight and Jolene Dirks of Sioux City; a daughter, Lynette James and her husband, Dennis of Pierre, S.D.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Ohlrichs and wife Ruth; a sister, Bernice Less and husband Robert, and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Dirks and Marie DeBoom, all of Le Mars; and many nephews and nieces.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard June 4, 1997; son, Dale in 1995; and sister, Helen Johnson.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
