Alvin J. Howe, 85, of rural Hinton, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at his residence.

Alvin Julius Howe was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Lincoln Township, Plymouth County, rural Hinton. He was the first born child of Henry and Caroline (Muecke) Howe. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hinton, where he was a lifelong member. He attended country school in Lincoln Township and Tri-State Business College in Sioux City.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947, stationed in Japan.

Alvin and Marilyn June Freed were united in marriage Nov. 12, 1947, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City. They resided east of Hinton for 63 years, where they farmed and raised cattle.

Alvin's interests and hobbies were closely related to this family and farming. He enjoyed summers at their home in Okoboji, and made special memories during his fishing trips to Canada.

Alvin was an active DeKalb dealer for 36 years.

He was a member of the Plymouth County Cattleman's Association and served as president for four years.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; two sons and their wives, David and Theresa of Hinton, and William and Ann of Albert Lee, Minn.; five grandchildren, Emily Howe of Omaha, Grant Howe of Hinton, Mariah, Lana and Logan Howe of Albert Lee; his sister, Bonnie Frerichs of Hinton; his sisters-in-law, Bonnie Achord and Delores Freed, both of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and his wife, Mervin and Thelma Howe; a grandchild, Elizabeth Marie Howe; and brothers-in-law, Eugene Freed and Virgil Frerichs.

He will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Schoop officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hinton, with military rites. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday), with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Travis officiating, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.
