(Died January 6, 2011)Le Mars, Iowa – David R. Rohlfsen, 65, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at his home following a brief illness. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Burial will follow at a later date at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mauer –Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. to greet friends.
David Russell Rohlfsen was born on November 15, 1945 in Le Mars, Iowa, one of three sons born to Stanley and Lillian (Frerichs) Rohlfsen. He attended school in Le Mars, graduating from Le Mars High School in 1964. He furthered his education at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska and at the University of Iowa.
On August 6, 1968 David was inducted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War prior to receiving his Honorable Discharge on May 15, 1970, having attained the rank of Sergeant. Following the war, David moved to Greely, Colorado where he attended Colorado State Teacher’s College. He earned his degree in education and took a teaching position in Greely.
David met Terry Kruger in 1982 and together they farmed and raised livestock in the Marcus, Iowa area. In 1986, they moved to the Rohlfsen farm south of Le Mars. David continued to raise livestock, and in 1992, began an eleven year employment with Gateway in North Sioux City, South Dakota. David and Terry were united in marriage on March 19, 1999 in Elk Point, South Dakota.
David truly enjoyed farming and raising livestock. He wrote extensively and was an avid reader. He liked to take trips with is family, especially to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Terry Rohlfsen of Le Mars, Iowa; a daughter Shel Ruden and her husband Kyle of Le Mars; granddaughters Nikki and Brittani Ruden of Le Mars; his mother Lillian Rohlfsen of Le Mars; two brothers, Tom Rohlfsen and his wife Myrna of Tampa, Florida and Jim Rohlfsen and his wife Georgia of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Stanley.
