(August 15, 1931 - August 11, 2010)

Le Mars, Iowa – George W. Frerichs, 78, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 16, 2010 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Rev. Gary Landsness and Pastor Marcia Young will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars with Military Honors provided by Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.

George Wilbur Frerichs was born on August 15, 1931 on a farm near Le Mars, Iowa. He was the son of Claus B. and Minnie (Satthoff) Frerichs. George attended country school near his home and later graduated from Le Mars High School in 1950. After graduating, George enlisted in the United States Navy on March 4, 1952. He proudly served his country as a navigator during the Korean War and earned an Honorable Discharge on March 2, 1954. George returned to Le Mars and attended Westmar College. On September 30, 1961 George and Kathy Bogaard were united in marriage at Orange City, Iowa. They made their home in Le Mars.

Following college he took a position with Wells’ Dairy as a milkman. George worked for the dairy for many years before he switched careers to become a Prudential Insurance Agent. George was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He ushered, served on Council, taught Sunday School and served on numerous committees throughout the years. George was also a member of Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion for over 50 years. Some of his hobbies were woodworking, fishing, gardening, bowling and he was an avid reader. He enjoyed do-it-yourself projects and remodeling. He rarely missed his grandchildren’s activities no matter where they were held.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, of 48 years, Kathy of Le Mars, IA; two daughters and their husbands Beth and Mark Strub of Le Mars, IA and Kay and Roger Bohnenkamp of Remsen, IA; grandchildren Zackary, Benjamin, Sarah and Matthew Strub, Christopher Bohnenkamp and his fiancé BreeAnn Radcliffe, and Nicole Bohnenkamp; a brother Leon Frerichs of Anaheim, CA; two sisters and their husbands Ardyth and Bernie Fisher of Helena, MT and Carol and Charlie Rowe of Lake Park, IA; two sisters-in-law Donna Frerichs and Marlys Frerichs both of Le Mars, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law Milt and Alma Bogaard of Orange City, IA and Dr. Lee and Ruth Van Voorhis of Dakota Dunes, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Gerald, Richard and Stanley; father and mother-in-law Nicholas and Kate Bogaard, brothers and sisters-in-law Richard Bogaard, Cliff and Ethel Bogaard, Peggy Frerichs, and Ron Fick. George gave the gift of life by donating tissue through the Iowa Donor Network.
