Roland Kenneth Swanson, 73, a lifelong Akron, farmer died Monday, May 14,1990 in a Sioux City hospital of a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. The Rev. William Flemr will officiate. "In The Garden" and "The Lord's Prayer" will be sung by Linda Swanson, accompanied by Carol Harris, organist. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery in Akron, under direction of the Schroeder funeral home of Akron. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are Russ Toben, Lee Swanson, Stephen Swanson, Joe Toben, Kirk Swanson, and Roland Swanson.

Mr. Swanson was born April 14, 1917, in Union County, South Dakota, to Carl August and Gerda (Linn) Swanson. He lived on the family farm since the age of 4 years. He graduated in 1935 from the Westfield High School. He married Esther Sand, Nov. 23, 1938 in Sioux City, and moved to the family farm. He served for 20 years on the Westfield school board, and also served as board president. He served on the Plymouth county ASCS committee for 30 years. He retired from active farming in 1979. He was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran church in Akron, and had served on the church board for two terms.

He is survived by his wife, Esther of Akron; one daughter and son-in-law, Alyce and Marvin Toben; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Betty of Le Mars, Keith and Janice and Lynn and Linda of Akron; one sister, Lillian Adams of Akron; 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Ralph of Miami, Fla., and a sister, Harriet Jensen of Sioux City.
