Hunt Teen-Age Trio After Iowa Man Beaten to Death

HOUSTON (AP)—Three teenagers, led by a girl nicknamed “Wildcat,” were sought in Houston, Texas, today after being named as the slayers of a 38-year-old Iowa man in Miles City, Mont., last week.

Houston police and the Harris county sheriff’s department were asked to keep watch for the trio, including two 16-year-old girls and a 16-year-old boy, by Custer County Sheriff, C. M. Allen of Miles City.

Sheriff Allen said he had received information that the three stole an automobile near Laurel, Mont., and when they left there confided they planned to drive to Houston, where one of the girls has a boy friend.

The man for whose slaying they are sought is John Hoffman, 38, who stopped off in Miles City September 11, while en route from the west coast to his home in LeMars, Iowa. Sheriff Allen said Hoffman was found that night lying in an alley brutally beaten. He died in a hospital in Miles City last Friday.

Prior to his death he described his assailants as a teen-age trio he had befriended during his stop in the Montana city, Sheriff Allen said. Further investigation resulted in the arrest in Laurel of a 15-year-old boy, who said he was with the other three when they brutally beat Hoffman and robbed him of $60. It was from this boy that authorities learned the three were headed here.
