James “Jim” Valentine Sitzmann, Sr., 80, of Le Mars passed away Monday, December 20, 2010, with his family at his side, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday December 22, 2010 at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with Reverends Rick Sitzmann and Matt Hewitt concelebrating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery – Neptune, rural Hinton. His six sons will be pallbearers.

Visitation will be anytime after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, where there will be a Parish rosary at 4:00 p.m., a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:00 p.m. and a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m.

James Valentine Sitzmann was born April 26, 1930 in Le Mars, IA, the son of Arnold and Olive (Strub) Sitzmann. Jim attended Trinity Catholic School in Sioux City. He married Joan E. McColligan on January 10, 1951 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. Following their marriage the couple farmed for many years, south of Le Mars in Lincoln Township. They moved in from their farm to Le Mars in November of 1998.

Jim was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars and was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus (Trinity Council #1466) in Le Mars.

His true passion was being with his loving wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a man of great faith and devoted to Catholic Education. He loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s extracurricular events. Jim enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. He loved farming and had planted the crops for 60 years.

Survivors include twelve children and their spouses: Jim (Barb) Sitzmann, Jr. of Le Mars, Kathy (Tom) Langel of Le Mars, Marty (Marge) Sitzmann of Great Falls, MT, Angie (Dave) Erdmann of Le Mars, Rick (Debbie) Sitzmann of Hinton, Cindy (Mike) O’Kane of Elkhorn, NE, Alice (Lyle) Krienert of Le Mars, Barry (Julie) Sitzmann of Le Mars, Jason (Becky) Sitzmann of Hinton, Sam (Tera) Sitzmann of Ames, IA, Keri Sitzmann-Robey and her husband Stephen Robey of Elkhorn, NE, and Tami (Jim) Thibodeau of Omaha, NE; 38 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; four sisters: Lois Hardy of Sioux City, Jean Sitzmann of Le Mars, Joyce (Roy) Ryan of Juniper, FL, and Connie (John) Christiansen of Dallas, TX; two brothers: Reverend Rick Sitzmann of Sioux City and Earl Sitzmann of Le Mars; and a sister-in-law Dolores (Don) Lake of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joan on January 3, 2010; a son Bradley; a granddaughter Samantha Jo Erdmann; a brother Don Sitzmann; and a brother-in-law Ken Hardy.
