Peggy Searls, 86, of Akron, Iowa passed away Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron, Iowa. Monsignor Richard Zenk will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2010, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., with a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Parish Rosary, all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa.
Frances “Peggy” Schreiber was born July 9, 1924 in South Sioux City, Nebraska, the daughter of Edward and Dolly (Huffman) Schreiber. Peggy received her education in South Sioux City and graduated from South Sioux City High School. Following her schooling, she went to work as a clerk for the Dakota County Courthouse and later worked as a secretary for C.J. Auto dealership in Sioux City.
While attending a dance in Sioux City, she met her future husband, Walter Searls. They were united in marriage on May 26, 1951 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in South Sioux City. Peggy began her life in Akron. Early on, she was a homemaker for her family and helped her husband with the family business, Searls Repair. In the late 1950’s, Peggy began her 50-plus year career with Stanley Home Products, having served as district manager for many years. Peggy also served as secretary for the Iowa Blacksmith and Welder’s Association and enjoyed participating with her husband in the South Dakota Welder’s Association. Walt passed away October 13, 2009.
Many will remember Peggy for her weekly radio show, “Bits and Wit” on K.L.E.M. Radio in Le Mars, sharing humor centered stories and news about Akron and offering recipes for many to enjoy. Since December of 2001, Peggy has worked for the Akron Hometowner, editing obituaries and offering insight with her column, “Peggy’s Ponderings”.
Peggy was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron, having been active in Catholic Daughter’s of America for many years. Peggy will always be remembered for her cooking and baking. She treated many people through the years with goodies and treats. She also enjoyed crocheting. One of Peggy’s favorite pastimes was going to the grocery store in Akron. She always enjoyed visiting with the employees and kids. Peggy loved having coffee with friends and family, whether it was at home or at the bowling alley. But most of all, Peggy loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her son, Ed Searls of Akron, IA; 5 grandchildren: Gabe Searls of Akron, IA, Amanda Miller and her husband Steve of Pierre, SD, and their daughter, Brystol, Macrina Searls and her special friend, Sam Waterbury of Akron, IA, and their daughter, Isabella, Emilee Gravenish and her husband Troy of Akron, IA, and their children, Morgan, Brooklyn, Emerson, and Aniston, and Dylan Searls of Akron, IA; a daughter in law: Linda Gjesdal of Akron, IA; 2 brothers in law: Dan Searls of Akron, IA and William Searls of Sioux City, IA; 2 sisters in law: Dorothy Siebsen and her husband Robert of Minneapolis, MN and Lois Willer of Akron, IA; a special friend: Joyce Scherner of Akron, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; and a son: Gerald Searls.
