Fred Lammers, 80 of Akron, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, Iowa passed away Saturday, June 5, 2010 at his home in Akron.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Father Michael Erpelding will celebrate. Entombment will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Sioux City with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa. Visitation will resume from 10:00 a.m. until Mass on Wednesday at the church.
Frederick Lammers was born March 18, 1930 in Platte, South Dakota, the son of Jacob and Jontina (Hoekman) Lammers. He attended school in Platte, South Dakota.
He enlisted in the United States Army in September of 1948. He served his country as a medic in the M.A.S.H. unit during the Korean War. He was awarded the Marksmanship Medal for his service. He was honorably discharged in September of 1951. Following his service, he returned to Platte, but was unable to find work. He moved to Sioux City and started working at A & P Grocery. While working there, he met his future wife Maxine.
He was united in marriage to F. Maxine Hamlow on July 18, 1953 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. While making their home in Sioux City, Fred was a semi driver for Fremont Smith Trucklines, Siouxland Wholesale Grocery, and Metz Baking. He retired in 1991. In 2005, they moved to Akron, Iowa.
Fred was a longtime member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. He was also a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars in Sioux City. Fred enjoyed going hunting, fishing, and camping. He also enjoyed bowling and watching Iowa Hawkeye football. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of over 56 years, Maxine of Akron; 2 sons: Michael Lammers of Le Mars, IA, and Marvin Lammers and his wife Ruth of Sioux City; 2 daughters: Teresa Lammers and her husband Dan Rodriguez of Sioux City, and Linda Montag and her husband Dan of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Marion Lammers of Denver, CO, and Jacob Lammers, Jr. and his wife Mona of Kansas; and 1 sister: Ann Bok and her husband Ko of Meadowlands, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister: Rita Mae Lammers; and a sister in law: Dorothy Lammers.
