Richard “Red” Schierling, 74, of Akron, Iowa passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa. Pastor Steve Jewett of New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron, Iowa. Inurnment will be at a later date in Inman, Kansas. Visitation with the family present will be 1 hour prior the service on Friday at the church. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Lee Schierling was born September 20, 1935 in McPherson, Kansas, the son of Isaac and Marie (Thiessen) Schierling. He attended school in McPherson and graduated from McPherson High School in 1953.

He was united in marriage to Zona Wiens on December 31, 1954. To this union, two children were born, Steve and Charlotte. They later divorced.

Red enlisted in the United States Army and served his country for 3 years, stationed at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. He was honorably discharged. After his discharge, he lived in McPherson, Kansas for a short time before moving to Ontario, California. Red worked as a plane mechanic for General Electric for over 20 years.

In 1974, he moved to Westfield, Iowa. He owned and operated Red’s Service Station for 6 years. During his time in Westfield, he served two terms as mayor.

In 1985, he moved to Akron, Iowa. Red drove truck for Higman Sand and Gravel for over 20 years. After retiring in 2005, Red worked part time for Joe’s Ready Mix and Alliance Concrete.

Red was a founding member of New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron. He was a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron. Red enjoyed going to many sporting events with Hank Krause through the years. Red also enjoyed bowling, doing yard work, and playing cards. Red volunteered many hours in the community, at his church, and the American Legion. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his two children: Steve Schierling, Sr. and his wife Kristy of rural Akron, IA, and Charlotte Morris of Riverside, CA; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a sister: Shirley Stara and her husband Eugene of Fremont, NE; a friend: Pat Haage of Akron, Iowa and her daughter and family: Tina Detloff (Lance) and their son, Paul of Le Mars, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters: Kathryn Kaiser and Ruth Flohr; and a daughter in law: Jean Hamersma.

Honorary Pallbearers will be his friends and family from New Horizons United Church of Christ, Hoschler American Legion, and the Community of Akron and Westfield.
