Trudi Mitchell, 85, of Akron, Iowa passed away early Sunday, April 4, 2010 at her home in Akron, Iowa. Abiding by her wishes, Trudi will be cremated and her inurnment will be held privately.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron, Iowa with Monsignor Richard Zenk officiating. Visitations with the family present will be after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Akron followed by a 7:00 p.m. Parish Rosary all at the funeral home on Tuesday.
Honorary pallbearers will be Katlin Mitchell, Kelly Mitchell, Kasey Mitchell, Tony Tripp, Joey Tripp, Danny Malloy, Brady Tripp, Taylor Tripp, Emma Tripp, and Joey Tripp Jr.
Trudi I. Hazen was born August 14, 1924 on the family farm near Remsen, Iowa to Louis T. and Deborah (Means) Hazen. She attended country school and later graduated from Marcus High School in 1943. Following high school, Trudi attended college. Trudi accepted a position with the F.B.I. in Washington, DC as a young woman, but desired to return back to the Midwest. Trudi was united in marriage to James A. Mitchell on October 6, 1947 at Worthington, Minnesota. The couple lived in Omaha Nebraska for several years before settling in Sioux City, Iowa.
During World War II, Trudi had worked as a waitress for various Sioux City businesses for many years. Trudi was a very accomplished seamstress having created and sewed numerous wedding gowns and bridesmaids dresses. She operated Trudi’s Fashions in South Sioux City for several years. She later managed the Tail and Ale in Sioux City. She also had worked as a Senior Aide for Siouxland Aging Services and served as the resident manager for Martin Tower Apartments. Later in life, Trudi accepted a position as receptionist of the U.S. District’s Attorneys Office at the Federal Court House in Sioux City. In 2008, Trudi moved to Akron, Iowa to be closer to her son and grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. She enjoyed doing craft projects for family and friends. She also enjoyed and took pride in decorating her home and the many embroidery projects created. She particularly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and other extended family members.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Barb Mitchell of Akron; 3 grandchildren, Katlin Mitchell of Akron, Kelly Mitchell of Wildomar, California, and Kasey Mitchell of Akron; a sister, Connie Malloy of Sioux City, Iowa; a brother, Kermit Hazen and his wife Kathryn of Cherokee, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Louis T. and Deborah (Means) Hazen; 5 brothers, Maurice, Wayne, Vernon, Robert, and Philip Hazen; 4 sisters, Harriett French, Ruth Hazen, Grace Dorr, and Janet Whitworth.
