Patricia Bernard Welch, 79, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron, Iowa. Monsignor Richard Zenk will celebrate. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2010, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Catholic Daughter’s of America Rosary, all at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron is in charge of arrangements.

Casket Bearers will be her grandsons: James Beacom, Jason Beacom, Ben Bernard, Matt Campbell, Nathan Campbell, and Grahm Manley.

Honorary Casket Bearers will be her granddaughters: Jessica Schults, Carissa Campbell, Kelly Kjos, Jenny Klemme, Morgan Bernard, Carly Manley, and Lauren Manley.

Patricia Lee Montagne was born January 30, 1931 in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Albertine (LaCroix) Montagne. She attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School.

She was united in marriage to Phillip Bernard on May 23, 1950 in Akron, Iowa. Early on, Pat was a homemaker for her family. Later, she worked as a secretary for the Akron Veterinary Clinic. Following her time there, she worked for Sieffert’s in Akron as a collator. Later, she went to work for the Akron Care Center as the activities coordinator. She retired in 1993. Phil passed away March 10, 1995.

On December 29, 2001, she was united in marriage to James Welch in Akron, Iowa. Jim and Pat continued to make there home in Akron.

Patricia Bernard Welch was an exceptional woman in her faith and in her ability to love unconditionally everyone she came in contact with. She carried with her an exuberance and joy for life that was contagious. Pat was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron, having served for many years as church choir director and organist. She was also active in Catholic Daughter’s of America for many years. She was affectionately referred to as a “classy lady” and an “angel on earth”.

Pat enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and knitting. But most of all, she loved the time spent with family and friends. Pat was known for her humility and for her care and concern for the needs of others, always thinking of herself and her needs last.

Pat was a member of the Akron Golf Club. She was a volunteer for the Akron Care Center for many years. Her life was an example and inspiration to many. Pat will live on in the hearts of many others. She will greatly missed by all who knew her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Jim of Akron, IA; her children: Kathryn Beacom of Sioux City, IA, Linda Braun (James) of Tianjin, China, Paul Bernard (Rebecca) of Akron, IA, Jeane Stinton (Terry) of Branson, MO, Lori Campbell (Bill) of Le Mars, IA, and Lisa Manley (Bernie) of West Point, NE; her “bonus” step children: Aimee Tracz (Allen) of Holiday Isle, AK, Michelle Moeller (Jonathon) of Thousand Oaks, CA, Renee Quanbeck (Eric) of Sioux Falls, SD, Suzanne Solorio (Luis) of Glendale, AZ, and Doree Jean Angello (Jason) of Plainfield, IL; 13 grandchildren; 15 “bonus” grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 7 “bonus” great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Phillip Bernard, a granddaughter, Jillian Beacom, and two great grandchildren, Marley Schults and Evan Klemme.

Memorials may be made in Pat’s name to the Akron Care Center.
