Wayne Henke, 81, of Elk Point, South Dakota passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 1, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point, South Dakota. Reverend Jared Rakness will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron and the Veteran of Foreign War Post 915 of Elk Point, South Dakota. Burial will be at a later date in Brule Creek Cemetery, rural Elk Point, South Dakota. Visitation with the family present will be Sunday, January 31, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at the church. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Wayne Francis Henke was born September 10, 1928 on a farm near Akron, Iowa, the son of John and Mayme (Talbott) Henke. He attended Sayles Country School near Akron. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1951. He served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1953.

He was united in marriage to Marion Anderson on July 11, 1953 in South Sioux City, Nebraska. They farmed north of Elk Point, South Dakota. Later, he worked for Western Construction for several years. Wayne worked for Kern Advertisting in Sioux City, Iowa. He and Marion also owned and operated the Friendly Tavern in Elk Point. Wayne retired in 1990. Marion passed away March 8, 2008.

Wayne was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point. He was also a lifetime member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 915 in Elk Point. Wayne enjoyed playing bingo and watching western movies. He also enjoyed going deer hunting and fishing. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his 4 children: Merlin Henke and his wife Stacie of Jefferson, SD, Marla Henke of Elk Point, SD, Michele Gabel and her husband Steve of Elk Point, SD, and Paula Van Roekel and her husband Mark of Elk Point, SD; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a sister: Margaret Eden of Puyallup, WA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marion; 6 brothers: Marvin, Merlin, William “Buzz”, Kenneth, Leslie, and Clarence; and 2 sisters: Opal and Dorothy.
