Leland Burcham, 75, of Elk Point, South Dakota passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Dawn Quame of Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, Iowa will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2010, with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., all at the funeral home.
Leland Ray Burcham was born June 2, 1934 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Harold, Sr. and Odessa (Herron) Burcham. Shortly after he was born, he moved with his family to farm near Westfield, Iowa. He attended country and later graduated from Westfield High School.
He was united in marriage to Joyce Sampson on July 11, 1953 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. Leland and Joyce farmed near Westfield, Iowa. In 1956, they moved to a farm near Richland, South Dakota. In 1968, they moved to a farm near Elk Point, South Dakota. They retired from farming in 1990. In 1993, they moved to Elk Point.
Leland loved to go fishing and camping. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of over 56, Joyce of Elk Point, SD; 3 children: Terry Burcham and his wife Marilyn of Burbank, SD, Rhonda Begley and her husband Tom of Mooresville, IN, and Rose Adams and her husband Steve of Elk Point, SD; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother: Harold Burcham, Jr. and his wife Mary of rural Sioux City, IA; a brother in law: Dan Searls of Akron, IA; two sisters in law: Marilyn Morehead of Merrill, IA, and Joy Dirks and her husband John of Akron, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in law: Virginia Searls; and a brother in law: Norman Morehead.
