Arlene Swift, 91, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2010 at the Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Dawn Quame will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2010 with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 6:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa.

Arlene May Anderson was born July 8, 1918 on the family farm north of Richland, South Dakota, the daughter of Norman and Marie (Clementson) Anderson. She attended country school in Richland, South Dakota. Following her schooling, she worked various jobs in the area.

She was united in marriage to Burton “Lefty” Swift on March 9, 1940 in South Sioux City, Nebraska. They traveled and lived in many different cities during Lefty’s professional baseball career. After he retired from baseball, they returned to the area. Arlene went to work at the Akron Creamery for many years. Later, she worked for Otis Radio in Hawarden, Iowa and Zenith in Sioux City, Iowa. Later in life, Arlene attained her real estate license and was in real estate until her retirement. Lefty passed away May 9, 2008.

Arlene was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron having serving in the Ladies aide for many years. She also enjoyed participating in the church-quilting group. She was also a 29-year member of the Hoschler American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Akron Golf Club. Arlene loved to play cards, especially bridge and pinochle, and enjoyed playing in several card clubs. Arlene loved gardening and growing gourds. She enjoyed going to garage sales, making crafts, and collecting teddy bears. But most of all, she loved the times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include a son: Buck Swift and his wife Elaine of Akron and their children, Bob Swift and his wife Mary Beth of Maple Groove, MN, and their children, Jerad and his wife Kelsie, Hannah, and Gabrielle, Kim Nagle and her husband Patrick of Las Vegas, NV and their children, Sam and Megan, Mylinda Harvey and her husband Mike of Akron and their children, Jessica and her fiancé Matt Minor, Amanda, and Aaron, Tammy Coyle and her husband Dana of Russell, MN, and their children, Tanner and Joey, and Tim Caskey and his wife Sandy of Sioux City and their son, Josh and his wife Barb; a daughter: Sally Miller and her husband Tom of Akron, and their children, Chris Harvey and her husband Brad of Akron and their children, Kelsie, Marissa, Monica, and Natalie, and Jim Miller and his wife Lesa of Omaha, NE and their children, Kyle, and Brooke Engel and her husband Marcus of Columbus, GA; a daughter: Suzie Rozell and her husband Dave of Akron, and their children, Josh Rozell and his wife Michele of Akron, IA, and Jeff Rozell and his wife Andrea of Akron, IA; a brother: Llewelyn “Dutch” Anderson and his wife Mary Ellen of Palm Desert, CA; 2 sisters: Olive Coverdale of St. Louis Park, MN, and Adeline Rhoten of Carlisle, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Burton “Lefty” Swift; 5 brothers: Earl, Myron, Amos, Orvie, and Ronald; and 2 sisters: Lillian Kramer and Agnes Anderson.
