Gerald “Jerry” Davis, 81, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Embassy Rehab and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Carlsen Funeral Home Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa. Pastor Michelle Williamson of Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron, Iowa. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from noon until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Gerald Verlyn Davis was born January 31, 1928 in Smithland, Iowa, the son of Lester and Lulu Mae (Sherman) Davis. Early in his childhood, his family moved to Sioux City. Gerald attended school in Sioux City. He enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country during WWII. While stationed onboard the U.S.S. Bunkerhill, he was a cook. He was honorably discharged.

Gerald went to work for Union Pacific Railroad; he worked for them for many years as a switchman. Later, he worked for many other businesses throughout the country. In 1986, he settled back in the area. He lived in Westfield, Iowa for several years before moving to Akron.

Gerald enjoyed the outdoors, he loved to go fishing, gardening, growing flowers, and feeding birds. He also enjoyed cooking for friends and family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Boise, Idaho; 5 children: Nancy Lewis of Sioux City, IA, Thomas Davis of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Gary Davis and his wife Kathy of Sioux City, IA, Regina Davis of Bountiful, Utah, and Raina Zapata of Las Vegas, NV; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a brother: Dennis Davis of Elk Point, SD; a sister: Lois Davis of Elk Point, SD; a sister in law: Jackie Davis of Sioux City, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Lester; and 3 sisters: Betty, Virginia, and Norma.

Gerald’s family wishes to thank the staff at Embasy Rehab and Care Center for their excellent care and support during this time.
