Phyllis L. Johnson, 85, of Akron, Iowa passed away Sunday, December 13, 2009 at the Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Dawn Quame will officiate. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 16, 2009, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa.

Phyllis Lucille Knapp Johnson was born March 15, 1924 in Worthington, Minnesota, the daughter of Oscar and Olive (Nyberg) Carlberg. She moved with her family to Galva, Iowa when she was 3 years old. She attended school in Galva and graduated from Galva High School.

She was united in marriage to John “Jack” Knapp on August 14, 1943 in Sioux City. They lived on a farm near Westfield, Iowa for many years. Phyllis owned and operated Phyllis’s Beauty Shop out of her home in rural Westfield while raising her family. Jack passed away November 16, 1966. She moved with her family to Akron in February of 1967.

Later, she attended Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City for nurses training. During that time, she worked for
Thorson Drug in Akron. After receiving her training, she worked for over 18 years as a L.P.N. at the Akron Care Center, retiring in 1986.

She was united in marriage to Roger Johnson on January 12, 1973 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. They made their home in Akron. Roger passed away January 18, 2008. Phyllis then moved to the Ridgewood Apartments before becoming a resident of the Akron Care Center.

Phyllis was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. Phyllis and Roger were active in the YoMaCo’s for many years. She enjoyed being with family, playing cards, especially pinochle and bridge, and socializing with friends at the Akron Senior Center. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her four children: Gordon Knapp and his wife Ritta of Orlando, FL, Stan Knapp and his wife Diane of Lincoln, NE, Barbara Brown and her husband Craig of Sioux City, IA, and Brian Knapp and his wife Terresa of Lohrville, IA; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Gwendolyn Erickson of Trinidad, CO, and Edith Wells of Anaheim, CA; a brother: Gerald Carlberg of Austin, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Jack Knapp and Roger Johnson; and 4 brothers: Donald, Gordon, Durland, and Byron Carlberg.

Memorials may be made in Phyllis’s name to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Choir.
