Cora Jans, 87, of Hawarden, Iowa, formerly of Akron, Iowa passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Hillcrest Health Care in Hawarden, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Westfield, Iowa. Pastor Barb Ross will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010, with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa.

Cora Evylin Ross was born November 1, 1922 on a farm near Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Fred C. and Gertrude M. (Thomas) Ross. She attended country school in Plymouth County, Iowa and later high school in Westfield. She graduated from Westfield High School.

She was united in marriage to Karl Jans on November 11, 1944 in Sioux City, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to California while Karl served in the armed forces during WWII. After his service, they returned to the area and moved to Akron. Cora was a devoted homemaker for her family. She also did interior painting for many residents in the area. Cora was also a bus driver for the Akron school district and later Akron-Westfield school district for over 30 years. In 1994, they moved to Hawarden, Iowa. Karl passed away in September of 2001. Cora continued to make her home in Hawarden.

She was a longtime member of the Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Westfield, Iowa. She was also a member of the Akron and Vermillion Saddle Club for many years. Cora loved the outdoors, especially horseback riding and camping. She had a great love for playing and singing music. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her 3 children: Jerry Jans of Sioux City, IA, Janice Gifford and her husband Bill of Sioux City, IA, and Jason Jans and his wife Sharon of Hawarden, IA; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; a sister: Helen Johnson of Akron, IA; a brother: Claude Ross of Oregon; a sister in law: Vera Ross of Akron, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Karl; and 2 brothers: Virgil and Lorne Ross.
