Edna Jurgensen, 95, of Akron, Iowa passed away Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Jean Morse will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa.

Edna Helena Henrietta Jurgensen was born July 3, 1914 on a farm north of Akron, Iowa, the daughter of August and Hannah (Lubben) Osterthun. She was baptized at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Chatsworth, Iowa and later confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. She attended Jones Country School near her home.

She was united in marriage to Arval Jurgensen on January 20, 1934 at the Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage in Akron. The couple farmed near Akron from 1934 to 1975. During that time, Edna was a homemaker for her family and helped Arval with chores around the farm. In 1975, they moved to Akron. In June of 2003, they became residents of the Akron Care Center. Arval passed away June 4, 2008. In March of this year, Edna moved to the Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Edna was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. She taught Sunday school for many years. Edna loved dancing and playing cards. She also enjoyed baking and cooking for her family and friends. Edna enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk Show. Edna’s favorite time of the year was Christmas, she loved the lighted trees and listening to the Christmas music. Edna loved her “birthday parties” with her family. Edna will be remembered for many things, but most all, her terrific sense of humor. She would share it with family, friends, and care center staff. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include a son: Marlin Jurgensen and his wife Donna of Alcester, SD; a daughter: Joyce Witt and her husband Bob of Rock Rapids, IA; 5 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a brother in law: Orlan Jurgenson of Omaha, NE; 2 sisters-in-law: Ellen Tabbert and her husband Bob of Harrisburg, SD, and Janiece Lawrence of Sioux Falls, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arval; 2 sisters: Nora Tammen and Alma Klemme; and a great-granddaughter: Kelsey Ellen Witt.
