Jean Waterbury, 85, of McCook Lake, South Dakota, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009 at her residence in McCook Lake.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2009 at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Tanya Sherrill of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitations will be after 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and Prayer service at 6:30 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Casket Bearers will be Molly Krivohlavek, Daniel Fuxa, Barbie Hanson, Donald “Pete” Peters, Sam Waterbury and Randy Waterbury.

Jean Isabel Waterbury was born May 31, 1923 in Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of J. Gus and Celia (Fairbrother) Anderson. She attended school in Hawarden and graduated from Hawarden High School. Following graduation, she moved near family in Wheaton, IL. She worked at a Military Defense Plant during WWII. Following the war, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska where she lived with her sister and worked for an insurance company.

Later, she moved back to Hawarden, where she met her future husband, Marlo Waterbury. She and Marlo were united in marriage on April 20, 1947 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. They farmed in Union County, South Dakota, just west of Chatsworth, Iowa. In the early 60’s, they moved to Sioux City, where they owned and operated Waterbury Taxidermy. In 1966, they moved to McCook Lake, South Dakota. Later, she and Marlo operated Tri-State Janitorial. After retiring, they continued living in McCook Lake. Marlo passed away August 29, 2003.

Jean enjoyed shopping and traveling with her husband for their business. She also enjoyed reading, riding her bike, and going for pontoon rides on the lake. She was avid collector of chicken and rooster memorabilia. She also enjoyed collecting watering cans. She loved her Siamese cats. But most of all, she loved the time spent with her family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great grandson. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her two children, Mark Waterbury of McCook Lake, SD, and Mary Fuxa and her husband Don of McCook Lake, SD; 3 grandchildren: Molly Krivohlavek and her husband Seth and their son, Kellen of Bennington, NE, Daniel Fuxa and his fiancé Laura Kirchberg of McCook Lake, SD, and Barbara Jean Hanson and her husband Troy of Sioux City, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marlo; a daughter-in-law: Rose Ann Waterbury; and a sister: Barbara Eneboe.
