Our mother, Elizabeth (Hlavac) Simek began life’s journey February 23, 1910 at Lesterville, South Dakota. Mom’s parents, Frank and Christina (Hacecky) Hlavac had eleven children (Benjamin, Joseph, Edward, Caroline, Elizabeth, Paul, Marie, Frank, Charles, (Irene and John died in infancy). Mom was sixteen when her mother passed away and she inherited a majority of the women’s family responsibilities, including, caring for baby brother Charlie. He is the surviving sibling along with three sister-in-laws Mabel and Clara Hlavac and Helen Svoboda. Our mother met George L. Simek in Tabor SD and married in 1933. They had three children; Eugene (Mavis) Simek, Yankton, SD, Marlene (Orville) Feauto, Akron, IA and Marie (Myron) Dierks, Northfield, MN. There are eight grandchildren: M. Simek, Gary Simek, Dennis Feauto, Cheryl (Feauto) Beach, Vicky (Dierks) Smith, Valerie (Dierks) Wagner, David Dierks, Myra Dierks, fifteen great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dad’s death in 1978 and grandson’s Gary’s in 2003 were sad events. The happy times included good farm crops, a milking machine, bountiful gardens, building a retirement home in Chatsworth IA. She loved playing Bingo, planting flowers, cooking holiday dinners, card playing with grandchildren as they laughed or cried over the pennies won or lost. Most importantly were the welfare, happiness, and successes of her family. Elizabeth was a caring person with a ready smile and the recipient of many compliments regarding her pleasant personality and demeanor. Deeply committed to her faith, she ended her 99 year journey March 11, 2009 at the Sister James Care Center, Yankton SD. We, Elizabeth’s family, are grateful for a peaceful ending. We will miss you and are very proud to call you “MOM” and “GRANDMA”. Goodbye, we love you.
