Elmo Fletcher, 87, of Akron, Iowa passed away Saturday, February 13, 2010 at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Jean Morse will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, 2010, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa.

Elmo Clark Fletcher was born October 17, 1922 on a farm in Union County, South Dakota, one of eleven children born to Lawrence and Nora (Nall) Fletcher. Elmo attended Sayles country school in Union County. He attended Akron High School where he loved to play football, starting at center for the team weighing only 135 pounds. He graduated with the class of 1941.

Elmo was united in marriage to Naomi Steinert on June 22, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. They farmed together in Union County, South Dakota on the homestead. In 1962, they moved to a farm south of Akron, where they still resided. Elmo retired from farming in 1987.

Elmo was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. He served on church council, former church treasurer, and taught Sunday school for many years. Elmo loved sports, especially football and baseball, watching the Vikings and Twins. He enjoyed watching the youngsters of the Akron-Westfield area, and keeping up with their activities and events. Farming was Elmo’s life, even after retirement, he continued to offer his son suggestions and ideas on how things should be done. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife of over 65 years, Naomi of Akron, IA; 3 children: Sharon Jackson (Marlyn) of Plymouth, MN, Robert Fletcher (Gloria) of rural Akron, SD, and Nancy Enstrom (Floyd) of rural Akron, IA; 3 grandchildren: Jon Jacobs and his daughter, Isabella of rural Akron, IA, Tom Jacobs (Kelly) and their children, Sloan and Flynn of Buffalo, MN, and Jerod Enstrom of Bentonville, AR; 2 step grandchildren: Davidjon Kaberna (Janet) of Elk Point, SD, and Damon Kaberna (Tonya) of Wapella, IL; a brother: Darcy Fletcher of Sergeant Bluff, IA; a sister in law: Margaret Fletcher of Des Plaines, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers: Edgar, Roland, Floyd, Ray, and Quigley; and 4 sisters: Lora Johnson, Lorene Moehling, Muriel Fletcher, and Maude Fletcher.

Memorials can be made in Elmo’s name to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in care of the family.
