Jerry L. Kelley, 66, of Hawarden, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2008 at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Reverend Dawn Quame of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa will officiate. Burial with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitations will be after 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2008, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Jerry Logan Kelley was born November 16, 1941 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of John Raymond and Xaveris Katherine (Hoffmann) Kelley. He attended Breezy Hill Country School near Westfield, Iowa. Following his schooling, he helped his father on the family farm and worked for the Akron Lumber Company.

He enlisted in the United States Army on December 10, 1963. He served his country during the Vietnam conflict. He was honorably discharged on December 9, 1969.

After returning home, he continued to work for the Akron Lumber Company and helped various contractors in the Akron area. Later, he worked for Burlington Northern Railroad, Harold Campbell Trucking, L.G. Everist, and Lynott Implement in Hawarden. He worked as a driver and mechanic for Lynott’s. He retired in 2004 after 30 years service.

He was united in marriage to Mary Mace on May 20, 1989 in Elk Point, South Dakota.

He was a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron, Iowa. He enjoyed being outdoors, whether he was out on a lake fishing or camping in the woods, he loved nature. He also enjoyed working puzzles of all kinds and working crosswords. He found great joy in rebuilding discarded bicycles and giving them to kids who did not have one. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Mary of Hawarden, Iowa; twin daughters: Jeri and Teri Kelley of Hawarden, Iowa; a step-son: Steve Mace and his wife Heather and their children, Amber and Brittany of Hawarden, Iowa; 9 siblings: Dan Kelley of Burlington, NC, Jan Embrey and her husband Lew of Claflin, KS, Tom Kelley and his wife Jeannie of Sioux City, IA, Tim Kelley and his wife Donna of Akron, IA, Jim Kelley and his wife Betty of Sioux Falls, SD, Bob Kelley of Akron, IA, Garnet Buum and her husband Gary of McPherson, KS, Nancy Kelley of Elyria, OH, and Rick Kelley and his wife Ronelle of Akron, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: John and Xaveris Kelley; a brother: Pat Kelley; and a nephew: Jeff Kelley
