Wayne W. Brown, 57, of rural Akron passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services were held on Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church E.L.C.A. in Akron, with Pastor Doug Baker of Hawarden (Iowa) Community Church officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Akron.

Wayne W. Brown was born Dec. 9, 1948, in Akron, the son of Wallace and Marietta (Anderson) Brown. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. He attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1967. He attended college at Southern State in Springfield, S.D., where he was a Little All-American running back and standout track athlete. He graduated in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in industrial arts.

He was united in marriage to Jean Tjeerdsma on Aug. 15, 1973, in Springfield. They are the parents of a son, Walker.

Wayne was a teacher and coach for eight years in Springfield, Sheldon, Iowa, and later Sioux City West High School. In 1981, he and his family returned to his hometown of Akron. He owned and operated Brown Insurance Services in Akron for many years, and in addition loved farming and ranching west of Akron.

He was a member of Hawarden Community Church where he served as an elder, deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the South Dakota Cattleman's Association and the South Dakota-Iowa Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. He was an award-winning and nationally ranked insurance agent. He enjoyed vacations in Hawaii. He loved sports, horses and checking the cows. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of more than 32 years, Jean of Akron; a son, Walker Brown and his wife, Leah, and their daughter, Ellie, of Baxter, Minn.; his mother, Marietta Brown of Westfield, Iowa; three sisters, Jerrine Johnson of Alcester, S.D., Wanda Kayl of Grand Island, Neb., and Pat Benton and her husband, Randy, of Akron; one brother, Bill Brown and his wife, Sue, of Akron; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wallace Brown, and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Casket bearers were Kenny Waag, Randy Terpstra, Arlen DeZeeuw, Rick Johnson, Andrew Brown and Ben Brown.
Honorary casket bearers were David Allen, Paul Krohn and Jim Jones.
