George Marienau Thrown From New Pontiac Saturday
A Sioux Falls man, George E. Marienau, 29, was killed in a one-car accident which occurred at 9:10 p. m. Saturday two miles northwest of Larchwood on Highway No.9. The car in which he was riding was a 1955 four-door Pontiac driven by Robert G. Toohey, also of Sioux Falls. Toohey suffered a fractured leg, bruises, lacerations and contusions in the accident and is reported to be in "good" condition at the McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls.
The vehicle, traveling west, ran off the left side of the roadway while going around a curve, followed the shoulder for 300 feet and then traveled 234 feet bouncing and rolling, and then caught on fire. Mr. Marienau was thrown 30 to 40 feet, received a broken neck and died instantly. Toohey, pinned in the vehicle, was pulled out by neighboring farmers, Harry Grotewold and Adrian Mulder, who also extinguished the flames. Damage was total to the vehicle.
Funeral services for Mr. Marienau were held at 11 a. m. Tuesday at the East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. A Sioux Falls resident since 1947, Mr. Marienau was a driver salesman for the Sunbeam Bakery Company. Burial was held in Brunsville, Ia.
