John P. (Jack) Barthole, 69 of Remsen, a longtime businessman there, died Tuesday (Jan. 6, 1990)at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars, where he had lived since March 10,1988.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Remsen St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Paul Eisele officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery under direction of the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. Graveside rites will be by Post 220 American Legion in Remsen and Post 3328 VFW, Remsen. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday with the parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was born Dec 13, 1920, at Remsen to James and Marianne Kirsch Barthole. He attended Remsen schools and entered the United States navy July 30, 1940. He was discharged July 28, 1946 and had served during World War II on the USS Louisville. He married Irene Schiltz, Aug. 1, 1954 at Carroll, Iowa. He owned and operated Barthole's Comer Tavern in Remsen since 1946, retiring in 1986. The business is now operated by his son.
Survivors are his wife, Irene, Remsen; a son, Ronald Barthole, Remsen; a brother, Raymond of Deer Park, Wash.; three sisters, Mrs. Al (Elizabeth) Frericks, Mesa, Ariz; Mrs. Jim (Margaret) Holton of Le Mars and Mrs. Milton (Marie) Nussbaum of Alton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Edward in infancy; Charles and Nick.
