Merrill special Fred Hammond, 85, longtime Merrill resident, died in his sleep at his Merrill home Wednesday after a 2-ycar illness.

Fred Hammond was born March 31, 1882. on a farm near Merrill, the eldest child of Nathaniel and Henrietta House Hammond.

He resided in Plymouth County his entire life except for 1907 and part of 1908 when he lived in Florence and Albia S.D. He married Maggie Mae Grebner. June 27, 1906, in Johnson Township. He was a carpenter and contractor and he built many homes and barns in the county. Mr. Hammond was manager of the S. 11, Bowman and later the Lampert Lumber Yard in Merrill for 32 years.

He was actively interested in his town and in local organizations and he served on the town council for a time. He served on the volunteer fire department for over 40 years. After his health failed, he did cabinet work in his home.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Merrill Methodist church. Rev. Dwight Garrington will officiate and burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill under direction of the Luken-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Survivors are his wife. Maggie of Merrill; two sons, Earl of Lomila, Calif., and Arnold of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Rodney of New York City, Capl. Richard Hammond of Longmont, Colo.; Curtis and Venessa of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and five sisters.
