Jack Baker, 72, of Hawarden, former Akron resident, died Friday (March 9, 1990) in McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls of a short illness.

Memorial services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden. Pastor Karla J. Kirkeby officiated. Rhonda Wiksen, organist, accompanied the congregational singing of "Amazing Grace" and "This Is My Father's World".

Mr. Baker was born June 20,1917, to Rollo and Estella Jennisen Baker, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He grew up in Akron and graduated in 1935 from the Akron high school. He married Mildred Eshleman in Sioux City. He owned and operated a road grading service and farmed, with his father in the Akron area. He married Vera Tank in October 1968. The couple made their home in Hawarden.

Mrs. Baker died in February 1989. Mr. Baker was a member of the United Methodist church and Masonic Lodge while living in Akron.

Survivors include two sons, Scott of Chicago and Jeff of Sarasota, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Daycleth (Pam) Walker of Sioux Falls; a brother, Slade Baker of Mankato, Minn., a sister, Mrs. T. R. (Barbara) Burnight of Mound, Minn.; a step-sister, Mrs. Don (Dorothy) Kratochvil of Brookings, S.D.; and a grandson, Alec Baker of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Mrs. Edith Baker, and a step-sister Judy Baldwin.
