Alton V. Foster, 73, 1021 Carlson Drive, Orlando, Florida, died April 5, 1992, after a long illness.
Services were held April 8, at the Broadway United Methodist church in Orlando, with Rev. Daniel J. Parrish officiating. Arrangements were by Baldwin-Fairchild funeral home, Lake Ivanhoe Burial was in Glen Haven Memorial Park in Winter Park, Fla.
Mr. Foster was born Oct. 14, 1918 in Waverly, Alabama. He graduated from the Waverly high school in 1938, and attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Mo., in 1938 39., He was a member of Broadway United Methodist churches in Phenix City, Ala., Columbus, Ga., Cedartown, Ga. and Orlando, where he taught Sunday school for several years. He was president and secretary of Methodist men's clubs and served on the board of stewards. He was a member of Lions Club and American Legion.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II, where he was chief cook for the Officer's clubs while stationed in the Marshall Islands. He was employed by the Alabama state employment service in Phenix City for two years; Chamber of Commerce manager for several years and editor of the Chamber newsletter while in Phenix City. For seven years he was manager of the Cedartown, Georgia, Chamber of Commerce, followed by seven years in the nation's business department of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where he held No. 1 and No. 2 spots in sales in the entire nation. A great lover of music, Mr. Foster was a personal friend of bandleader Blue Barren and did promotional work for Blue Barren's "Music of Yesterday and Today". He was a radio disc jockey for Phenix City's WPNX, and producer and niaster of ceremonies of the Chamber Hour, a news and musical program in Phenix City, and Chamber of Commerce news and musical TV show in Rome, Ga. He was cochairman of the Columbus-Phenix City Hi-Neighbor program, and was selected "Young Man of the Year" in 1953 for outstanding service.
Survivors include his wife, Winifred Thatcher Foster, Orlando, Fla., formerly of Akron; a son, Wayne Alton of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Barbara Kay Black, Columbus, Ga., and Lynn Elaine Fenn of Clermont, Fla.; one brother; four grandchildren; and four nieces.
