Lewis Peterson, 81, of Alcester, S.D., died Wednesday, April 22, 1992, at Dakota hospital in Vermillion.
Services were Saturday, April 25 at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester. Rev. Richard Luttman officiated. Musical selections were "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross", accompanied on the organ by Velma Groon. A duet was sung by Daryl and Beverly Fickbohm. Burial was in Nathaniel Lutheran cemetery, rural Alcester, under direction of Wass funeral home, of Alcester.
Honorary pallbearers were Paul Harkness, James Harkness, John Harkness, and Tom Fierro. Active pallbearers were Arthur Finzen, Ronald Finzen, Matthew Finzen, Todd Finzen, Gary McCormick and Larry Meadors.
Mr. Peterson was born March 6, 1911, in rural Alcester, son of A. L. and Bertina (Rogness) Peterson. He attended Cole country school and then began farming with his father near Alcester. He married June Finzen at Immanuel Lutheran Church June 22, 1944, in Akron, Iowa. The couple farmed northeast of Alcester until 1976, when they retired and moved to El Paso, Texas. She died In February 1980. He returned to Alcester in 1982 and became a resident of Morningside Manor in 1987. Mr. Peterson had been a member of Peace Lutheran church since 1987 and prior to that was a member of Nathanael Lutheran Church, where he held various offices. He was active in the Democratic party. He was a member of the Alcester Lions club and was a government grain inspector with the ASCS. He was active in the Farmer's Union on the county, district and state levels.
Survivors include a daughter, Paulene and her husband, Terry Harkness of El Paso, Texas; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Carmen MeCormick of Alcester and Avis Rhodes of Haward, Calif.
He was also preceded in death by a brother; and two sisters.
