Edwin F. Nelson, 100, of Akron, Iowa, died Thursday, July 29, 1999 at the Akron City Convalescent Care Center following a brief illness.
Services were held Monday, August 2, 1999 at the Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Westfield, Iowa, with Reverent Steve Jewett officiating.
Burial was in Pleasent Valley Cemetery, rural Adaville, Iowa. Schroeder Funeral Home, Akron, was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Eric Banks, Craig Bobier, Leonard Buryanek, Harold Whiting, Harold Moffatt, Tom Ross, Elmer Varenhorst, and Dennis Schuette. Honorary Pallbearers were Henry Anderson, Milton Anderson, Stanley Anderson, Allen Vanderhelm, and David Nelson.
Pianist was Sheryl Banks with Shirley Banks as soloist.
Mr. Nelson was born December 27, 1898 in Ivoryton, Connecticut, the son of John and Ida (Anderson) Nelson. Mr. Nelson moved to the Akron area on April 1, 1924 and lived with his uncle Ernest Anderson. He worked on several farms in the area prior to his parents arrival from Connecticut. Upon their arrival, Mr. Nelson farmed with his father for many years and later cared for his invalid mother.
He married Elsie Anderson Shearer on October 21, 1944 in Elk Point S.D., she died on October 29,1995. They moved to Westfield in 1956 upon their retirement from farming. Mr. Nelson then painted and worked at the Westfield school as a janitor part-time. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.
He was a member of the Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Maxine and her husband, Lesley Anderson, of Akron, and Lorriane Bullock of Sioux City, la.; three grandsons and their wives, Eric and Marlys Anderson of Akron, Dennis and Laura Bullock and Darrel and Christi Bullock, all of Sioux City, la.; one granddaughter, Susan Anderson of Akron; four great-grandsons; three great-great grandchildren;
one sister, Hedwig Waterman-of Kingsley, la.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harry, Ernest, and Fredrick; and two sisters, Ruth Irwin and Edith Lee Peterson.
