SIOUX CITY -- Mahlon Robert Trobaugh, 77, of Sioux City died Friday Nov. 20, 2009, at Touchstone Living Center in Sioux City.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Waterbury Funeral Service. Burial in the Westfield Township Cemetery near Westfield, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mahlon was born on Nov. 30, 1931, on the family farm in Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Robert David and Opal Ellen (Whitead) Trobaugh. He attended country schools and at the age of 8, his father put Mahlon in charge of a team of horses, and working in the fields. At the age of 14, Mahlon and his cousin, Wes Whitead, started breaking horses for area residents. He also used his team of horses digging basements in Sioux City for new homes that were being built.
Mahlon served his country during the Korean conflict as a member of the U.S. Marines Corps from 1952 to 1953. Following his discharge from the Marines, he worked at a local gas station as well as at the Nixon Feed Store.
He was united in marriage with Kathryn Mae Rasmussen on Nov. 14, 1954, in Elk Point, S.D. Following his marriage, he began employment at the Sioux City Stockyards, where he continued to work for more than 32 years.
His love of horses furnished him with many enjoyments during his lifetime. He participated in the South Dakota Centennial Wagon Train from May 10, 1989, through Sept. 4, 1989. He was one of a very few individuals who started on May 10 and completed the entire route. He truly loved spending time with his family and his "Wagon buddies."
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathryn of Sioux City; two daughters, Trude Ortner and her husband, Dennis of Danbury, Iowa, and Clara Garvin and her husband, Mick of Bronson, Iowa; his son, Lyle and his wife, Omyra of Burnsville, Iowa; his brother, Orvis and his wife, Connie of Lawton, Iowa; his grandchildren, Andy Ortner and his wife, Michelle, Rich Ortner and his wife, Tonya, Kathy Harvey and her husband, Scott, Steph and Wyatt Trobaugh, Troy Schon, Odessa Loftus and her husband, Sterling, and Salena Schin; 11 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and numerous nieces nephews and cousins; as well as his many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Veva Monroe; his brothers, Tom and Delbert; a daughter, Lynette in infancy; and twins, Dean and Donna in infancy.
