Helen Niehus, 80, of Le Mars, died Friday July 2, 2010, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, following a brief illness.

The former Helen Teresa Traufler was born Jan. 25, 1930, in Le Mars, the daughter of John V. and Teresa (Wintz) Traufler. She grew up in Le Mars and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School.

Helen married James R. Niehus Feb. 5, 1951. Following their marriage, the couple farmed for several years south of Le Mars and then moved in 1969 to a farm near Parkers Prairie, Minn., where they continued to farm until 1981.

While living in Parkers Prairie, Helen worked for many years at the Pine Cove Supper Club in Wadena, Minn.

In 1981 they moved back to an acreage south of Le Mars. Helen was employed with the Wankum Inn for many years in Merrill. Her husband James died May 17, 1992.

For the past several years Helen has resided in Le Mars.

Helen was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars.

Survivors include her four children and their spouses: Mary and Floyd Miller of Bismarck, N.D., Bonnie and Gerald Vorderbruggen of Luverne, Minn., Patricia and Paul McAllister of West Plains, Mo., and Phillip and Janet Niehus of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers: Richard Traufler and his wife Janet of Denison, and Jerry and his wife Arlene of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Shirley Traufler of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John V. and Teresa (Wintz) Traufler; her husband, James; and two brothers, Bill and Tom Traufler.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. today (Tuesday) at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial was in Assumption Catholic Cemetery at Merrill. Visitation was after 3 p.m. Monday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there was a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. There was also one hour of visitation prior to the funeral at the church.

Pallbearers were Jason McAllister, Elizabeth McAllister, Neil Niehus, Sara Vorderbruggen, Eric Miller, and Tim Kilker.
