Frank Marienau, 76, of Merrill, died Sunday, June 27, 2010, at his home in Merrill, after a diagnosis of cancer in May 2009.
Frank Duane Marienau was born May 16, 1934, in Hawarden, the son of Edward and Caroline (Mattas) Marienau. Frank's father worked for the railroad and the family had lived in several communities in Northwest Iowa before settling in Merrill.
Frank graduated from Merrill High School with the Class of 1952.
He served his country in the United States Army, from 1957 to 1959, being stationed in Germany.
Frank was united in marriage to Margaret Olund Jan. 1, 1960, at the United Methodist Church in Merrill. The couple made their home in Merrill where they were blessed with three daughters: Heidi, Annette, and Tracey.
He worked for Wind-King Mfg., which later became Digz-All in Merrill, as a lathe operator for 25 years.
In 1971, Frank became a lathe operator for Gus Pech Mfg. in Le Mars until his retirement after 25 years in 1996.
During his retirement, Frank had worked for the City of Merrill assisting with maintenance and later as a custodian at Kissinger Elementary School in Merrill.
He enjoyed hunting for deer and pheasants and enjoyed the great outdoors, taking walks, going camping with family, and gardening. He especially enjoyed camping in the Black Hills and the trip Frank and Margaret experienced camping along the Al-Can Highway.
Frank was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In the mid 1960s Frank joined the Merrill United Methodist Church where he and Margaret where active in church activities.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Margaret of Merrill; three daughters, Heidi Brown and her husband Craig of San Diego, Calif., and their daughters Rachel and Meredith, Annette Marienau and Andy Esno of Wilson, N.C., and Tracey Johnson and her husband Bruce of Sergent Bluff, and their children, Cheyenne and Josh; two brothers, Melvin Marienau of Le Mars and Edward Marienau of Sioux City; four sisters, Marian Baker of Le Mars, Wilma Jessen and her husband Merton of Le Mars, Norma Vanderloo and her husband Virgil of Ackley, Iowa, and Waneta Tevis and her husband Gaylon of Puyallup, Wash.; three brothers-in-law, Richard Stroup of Arizona, Trygve Olund and his wife Mary of Sioux City, and Lennart Olund and his wife Helen of Irma, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Merrill United Methodist Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill, with military honors provided by the Olson-Halweg American Legion Post #125 of Merrill. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be after 4 p.m. Wednesday followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will continue Thursday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be Brandon Marienau, Jake Conover, Clark Johnson, Ed Richardson, Joshua Johnson, William Merchant.
