ATTORNEY E. C. ERICS0N DEAD

The people of this section .were
shocked and grieved Tuesday morning
to learn of the quite sudden
death of Attorney B. C. Ericson,
Elk Point. He was known to be
trifle indisposed after, a recent busi-
ness trip east, but his condition was
not given out as serious. Specialists
in Chicago advised him that he was
afflicted with arterio-sclerosis (hardening
of the arteries) and last Saturday
he went to Flandreau, S. D .,
consult his old-time friend, Dr. F . A
Spafford. While there he was stricken
suddenly and passed away in
short time.

Mr. Ericson was a native of Swe-
den and was born August 24, 1866.
In 1865, with his widowed mother, he
came to this country, residing
New York until 1872, when they came
to Union county, Dakota territory, lo-
cating on a homestead near Big
Springs, still retained by his brother,
Brick. He taught school five years
and in 1879 went to Elk Point to
read law in the office of Alexander
Hughes, a pioneer attorney, himself
becoming one of the ablest and most
brilliant lawyers of his state, and
in fact, the middle west. Mr. Eric-
son was a lifelong republican and
was active in the councils of his
party. He was a delegate from his
state to the national convention in
Minneapolis, was for two terms superintendent
of Union county schools and
had been mayor of Elk Point, served
in the territorial legislature of 1887
and was state senator in 1899.

His wife and two daughters mourn his
untimely taking away, as well as
legion of friends.

The State university at Vermillion
of which he was one of the regents,
closed out of respect during the day
of his funeral.

That Mr. Ericson could not have
lived to receive greater honors than
were about to come to him from
his state is generally and profoundly
regretted. He was not a politician,
but a genuine patriot. He was an
ardent champion of right things and
intensely loyal to his friends, and
his legal practice. He was excelled by
few in knowledge of law, ability and
shrewdness, yet he was strictly
honorable in every respect.

From among his many friends in
this locality, a number went to Elk
Point today to attend the funeral
and pay a last tribute of respect.
