Mrs. Katharine Hoffmann, 88, lifelong LeMars resident, died Sunday evening (July 31, 1977) at Brentwood Good Samaritan center where she had made her home the last four years.

Katherine Wiltgen was born March 20, 1889, in LeMars to Nick and Katharine Wanderscheid Wiltgen. She married John P. Hoffmann in LeMars, Oct. 21,1913. He died in 1966. After their marriage the couple farmed in Johnson township. They moved to LeMars in 1944. Mrs. Hoffmann was the second woman to become a licensed mortician in Iowa. She attended Houenshau-Carpenter mortuary school and was active in the family business when it was the Wiltgen funeral home.

After returning to LeMars in 1944, she was an accomplished seamstress and taught sewing. She also worked for Aalfs Mfg. and the J.C. Penney Co. in LeMars. She was associated with her family in the Hoffmann paint store in LeMars.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic church, LeMars, with her nephew, Rev. Edward Hoffmann, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery, Ellendale (rural Merrill), under direction of the Luedtke funeral home. The parish rosary will be recited 8 p.m. Tuesday and Catholic Daughters of America rosary, of which she was a lifetime member, will be at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Survivors are a son John P. of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. John (Xaveris) Kelley, Westfield, and Mrs. Leonard (Dolores) Woll, LeMars; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Sister M. Xaveris, S.C.C., Willmette,Ill, and Louise Wiltgen, LeMars.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Peter N. Wiltgen, and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hoffmann, Mrs. Mary Hecht and Sister M. Xavier.
