Franz Schneider, 94, of Le Mars, died Monday, June 7, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Franz William Leon Schneider was born April 27, 1916, on the family farm in Clinton County near Wheatland, Iowa, the son of John and Ernestine (Beckmann) Schneider. Franz was raised on the family farm and graduated from Wheatland High School with the Class of 1933.

Following high school, Franz worked on the family farm until enlisting in the United States Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station serving as an instructor until his discharge from the Navy in August 1945.

Franz was united in marriage to Sylvia Fern Bogh on July 26, 1942 in Wheatland. Following his discharge from the service, the couple returned to Plymouth County to the Bogh farm in Fredonia Township.

Franz loved the life of a farmer. He truly was a "steward of the land". He practiced and advocated for soil conservation throughout his life.

They farmed until their retirement in 1981 and continued to live on the farm until 1984 when they moved to Le Mars. In 1999 they moved to Park Place Estates. Sylvia died in March 2007 and Franz later moved to Plymouth Manor in December 2009.

Franz was a member of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ where he had served as an Elder. He had served as past president, voting delegate, and board member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the NW Iowa Business Association; past president, director, and secretary of the Producers Commission Association; past member of the Iowa Farm Bureau Resolution Committee, and a longtime member of Rotary International. He served with the Plymouth County 4-H where he had volunteered countless hours at the Plymouth County Fair, and a member of the NW Iowa Genealogy Society.

Through Franz's community involvement, he had received several honors through the years to include the Plymouth County Master Pork Producer, Plymouth County Farm Bureau Service to Agriculture Award, Sioux City Journal Soil Conservation Certificate of Merit, district recipient of the Iowa Soil Conservation Achievement Award, 4-H Silver Clover Award, and also was honored by Le Mars Rotary as a Paul Harris Fellow.

Survivors include his four children: Sheryl Schneider of Guatemala City, Guatemala, Kristann Cooper and her husband Jim of Pine, Colo., Dr. James Schneider and his wife Sheri of Hastings, Neb., and John Schneider and his wife Carol of Le Mars; nine grandchildren: Douglas Jones of Pine, Colo., Melanie Schneider of Madison, Wis., Cynthia (David) Nilsson of Boise, Idaho, Alyssa (Jonathan) McMillan of Houston, Texas, Sebastian (Carolina) Cabrera of Guatemala City, Guatemala, Nicholas Cabrera of Berkley, Calif., Ana Silvia Cabrera of Guatemala City, Guatemala, Jo Ellen Schneider of Le Mars, and Andrew Schneider of Le Mars; two great-granddaughters, Shelby and Shaylee McMillan; two sisters, Clara Hamdorf and K.
