Posted: Tuesday, May 18, 2010 12:00 amLE MARS, Iowa -- Dorothy M. Klemme, 88, of Le Mars died Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa. The Rev. Sarah Nye will officiate. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Wednesday. Stories, memories and expressions of sympathy may be directed through mauerjohnsonfh.com.
Dorothy M. Baack was born Sept. 9, 1921, on the family farm near Craig, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Katherine (Plueger) Baack. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig. Dorothy was the oldest of five children, Donald, Duane, Doris, and Delores.
Dorothy attended country school near her home. She then attended Western Union (Westmar College) in Le Mars and earned a teaching certificate. Dorothy used her certificate to teach school in Craig and at country schools in Grant Township. During World War II, she and a friend spent a summer in Minneapolis assembling bomb fuses.
After the war, Dorothy was united in marriage to Wilmer C. Klemme on Aug. 31, 1947, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig. They were blessed with three children, Terry, Steve and Lori. In 1948, the couple moved to a farm in the Akron, Iowa area. They farmed near Ruble, Iowa, until Wilmer was killed in a farm accident on March 9, 1963. After Wilmer's death the family moved to Le Mars. Dorothy returned to Westmar College and earned her full teaching certificate which allowed her to teach school at Remsen Union from 1966 until her retirement in 1986. She taught several elementary grades but mostly taught kindergarten.
Dorothy was a longtime member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, where she participated in church organizations throughout the years. She was the first woman to serve on the church council. She spent many years teaching Sunday School and helping the education committee. Dorothy enjoyed her retirement years by traveling all over the world. She also enjoyed reading, gardening and making quilts for members of her family. She also did volunteer work with Life Skills, Christian Needs, Le Mars Historical Museum, and the hospital Auxiliary gift store.
She will be lovingly remembered by her two children, Terry and his wife, Connie of Le Mars, and Steve and his wife, Lilo of Geneva, Switzerland; five grandchildren, Lyndsey of Le Mars, Alexander and Alison of South Amboy, N.J., Timothy and Patrick of Geneva, Switzerland; a brother, Duane Baack and his wife, Peggy of Littleton, Colo.; and a sister, Doris Haage of Le Mars.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilmer; an infant daughter, Lori; an infant sister, Delores; and a brother, Donald.
Memorials in Dorothy's name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or the Floyd Valley Hospital.
