KINGSLEY, Iowa -- M. Catherine Hamman, 100, of Kingsley passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kingsley, with the Rev. Mark Stoll officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present, and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are being handled by the Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Mary Catherine Hamman was born April 9, 1910, in rural Sanborn, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Anne (Graham) Geiger. In 1916, she and her family moved to Ashton, Iowa, where they lived until 1920, when they moved to a farm near Remsen, Iowa, and in 1922, moved to a farm east of Kingsley.

She married Leroy Hamman in September of 1926. After their marriage, they farmed in the Kingsley and Pierson areas until 1942, when they moved to a farm five miles west of Kingsley. They lived and farmed there until 1964, when Leroy died. After Leroy's death, Catherine continued to live on the farm until 1993, when she moved to Kingsley. In February of 2009, she moved to the Kingsley Nursing & Rehab Center.

Catherine had many interests which included raising chickens, growing strawberries and planting a large garden. She enjoyed making preserves which included her famous sweet pickles and she did embroidery and crocheting. She also enjoyed traveling and playing cards. Catherine was a long-time member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters in Kingsley. The family helped Catherine celebrate her 100th birthday in April of this year with 89 family members and numerous other friends and relatives.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Joseph Wayne and Roberta Hamman of Libertyville, Ill., William Harold and Marilyn Hamman of Sioux City, Francis George and Linda Hamman, and James Leroy and Millie Hamman, all of Kingsley; two daughters and their husbands, Anna Darlene and Rex Shearer of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Marjorie Helen and Roy Townsend of Washta, Iowa. Catherine is also survived by 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leroy; two grandsons, Jim Hamman and John Hamman; a great-grandson, Jacob Johnson; a great-granddaughter, Grace Friedman; and two brothers, George and John Geiger.

Also preceding her in death was a grandson-in-law, Brian Best.
