John P. Hoffman, a pioneer resident of Plymouth county, died at a local hospital on Wednesday night at 10 o'clock. He was taken ill about six weeks ago, a serious internal malady developing, and for the past three weeks had been at th e hospital, where he underwent two operations in the hope of relief.

John P. Hoffman was born at Beckerich, in the grand duchy of Luxemburg, Europe, October 5, 1845, where he grew up. When twenty-one years of age he came to America and settled at St. Donatus, Iowa. From there he went to Shellsburg, Wis., and at that place was united in marriage with Miss Katherine Dolan on February. 12, 1868. They came to Plymouth county the year after their marriage and settled on a farm in Johnson Township where he lived until 1906 when he came to reside in Le Mars. Mrs. Hoffman died on March 10, 1903 .

They farmed successfully in Johnson Township and amassed a comfortable competence, after years of honest toil and the overcoming of vicissitudes which were a part of the life pioneers in early days in northwestern Iowa.

Mr. Hoffman is survived by ten children, six sons and four daughters, who are Dennis of Currie, Minn.; James of Glasgow, Montana; Theodore and John, of Merrill; Frank and Leo of Le Mars; Mrs. Hubert Nemniers; of Miranda, S.D;, Mrs. A. G. Cumisky, of Lismore, Minn.; Miss Anna Hoffman, of Dubuque; and Mrs. Theo. Paal, of Currie, Minn. one daughter, Catherine, preceded him in death on February 5, 1920.There are thirty-nine grandchildren. He Is also survived by one brother, Theodore Hoffmann, of Le Mars; and one sister, Mrs. Anna Hecht, of Merrill.

His children were all were him when the end came with the exception of his son James , who is expected from Montana in time to attend the funeral.

Mr. Hoffman was an upright citizen and well liked In the community. He was successful farmer and took an active part in affairs in his township and wholesome interest in life and was respected by all who knew him. Mr. Hoffman was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years.

The funeral services will be held of Saturday morning at St. Joseph Church, of which the deceased was a member.
