Duane A. Herman, 77, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.
Duane Alvin Herman was born March 2, 1933, on the family farm west of Le Mars, the son of Harvey and Mabel (Gabel) Herman. Duane was the middle of 11 children. While growing up, Duane attended the Adaville United Methodist Church.
He attended country school and later graduated from Central High School in Le Mars in 1951.
Duane was united in marriage to Nancy Hoffman June 15, 1958 at Bushnell, Neb.
He served his country during the Korean War era in the United States Army.
Duane worked as a truck driver his entire working career. He drove truck for Harker's and drove stock trailer for several years before beginning his career with Wells' Dairy in 1973. He mostly drove milk routes for Wells' before retiring after 25 years of service in 1998.
Duane loved to drive and his family remembers many "country drives" to look at farms and fields throughout Plymouth County while growing up. During his retirement years, Duane often drove for local car dealers in the area.
Duane enjoyed collecting miniature trucks and tractors, especially, John Deere tractors and Chevrolet vehicles. He was a longtime member of the Le Mars Toy Club and enjoyed attending toy shows throughout the years.
He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars where he often volunteered when needed.
Duane was a lifetime member of the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 where he participated on the Honor Guard for numerous funerals and events.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Nancy of Le Mars; two daughters, DeAnne Fedde and her husband Will of Elkhorn, Neb., and their family, Stacy (Chad) Kramer of Le Mars, DJ Jennings of Elkhorn, Neb., Taylor Jennings of Omaha, Neb., Kyle Pinkard of Elkhorn, Neb., Courtney Fedde, Joshua Fedde, and Lucas Fedde all of Valley, Neb.; and Barbara Dorman and Ernie Keller of Plattsmouth, Neb., and their son Jimmy Himphill of Axtell, Neb.; three great-grandchildren: Hailey, Brandon, and Aiden Kramer of Le Mars; his siblings: Eva Varenhorst of Le Mars, Gerald Herman of Stanton, Marjorie (Virgil) Willer of Akron, Delores Bohlken of Le Mars, Shirley (Verlyn) Baker of Pickstown, S.D., Gladys Mroczkowski of Le Mars, Milford (Sharon) Herman of Grand Terrace, Calif., and Donald (Gloria) Herman of Urbandale; a sister-in-law, Estella Herman of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Leland in infancy, Milton and Willard Herman; in-laws Harry Varenhorst, Robert Mroczkowski, Don Bohlken and Elizabeth Herman.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars with the Rev. Jason Larson officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars was at Memorial Cemetery. Visitation with the family present was after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service Sunday evening at the funeral home. Visitation continued Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers were Chad Kramer, DJ Jennings, Kyle Pinkard, Ernie Keller, Will Fedde, and Lee Herman.
