Bernice M. Rogers, 89, of Le Mars, died Monday April 5, 2010, at The Abbey of Le Mars, following a lingering illness.
Bernice Mae Rogers was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Britt, the daughter of James F. and Bernadette (Liddy) Rogers. She moved to Le Mars with her family as a young girl and received her education in Le Mars, graduating from Le Mars Central High School. She furthered her education at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, where she earned her teaching degree. She then went on to teach in several Iowa communities including Rock Rapids. In the mid-1960s, Bernice retired from teaching and moved back to Le Mars to help care for her mother and sister, following her father's death.
She was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars.
Bernice was always proud of the Le Mars community and followed the sports, particularly back in the day when Gehlen would play Sioux Falls (South Dakota) O'Gorman High School in sports. She was especially proud of her Irish heritage.
Survivors include several cousins: Tom Rogers and his wife Gail, Pat Rogers and his wife Margo, Emmett Rogers and his wife Mary Gayle, all of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Susan Reedy of Chicago, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents: James and Bernadette Rogers; and a sister, Mary Lucille Rogers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Matt Hewitt officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. Thursday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume for one hour prior to the funeral on Friday morning at St. James Church.
