Ronald Cronin, 80, of Le Mars, died Saturday, March 27, 2010, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Ronald David Cronin was born Oct. 16, 1929, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars. He attended St. Joseph's School and, after his education, Ron took a position with the Vienna Bakery.

Ron enlisted with the Iowa Army National Guard on June 14, 1948, in Le Mars. He served with Co. K, 133rd Infantry as a gunner and ammo bearer. Ron earned his honorable discharge Jan. 26, 1956.

On Jan. 19, 1963, Ron and JoEllen Heimgartner were united in marriage in Denver, Colo. The couple made their home in Le Mars. Ron began his career as a mason with Wiltgen Construction. He worked as a bricklayer with Wiltgen's for more than 45 years. Throughout the years Ron traveled extensively in the Midwest and worked on numerous home, commercial and school building projects.

His pride in workmanship is evident today in the structures he helped to build. In addition to masonry, Ron farmed and raised livestock south of Le Mars.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Ron assisted with many building projects at St. John's including the office addition.

He enjoyed bowling, camping and played fast pitch softball in earlier years. Ron also had a love for racing stock cars, snowmobiling, Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and fast cars.

He was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Ron will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years JoEllen Cronin of Le Mars; a son, Michael Cronin and his wife, Glenda, of Longmont, Colo.; a daughter, Kristie Cronin and her fiancé, Brad Wiltman, of Le Mars; grandchildren, Nicholas Cronin, Garrett Wiltman, and Alicia Doran; a step-granddaughter, Isabelle Brandt; a brother, Lolan Cronin and his wife, Donna, of the Villages, Fla.; a sister Rita Ostert and her husband, Gerald, of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Riediger of Hinton; a brother-in-law. Harlan Heimgartner of Redlands, Calif.; and special family friends, Tiffany and Kevin Olson, and their children, Nicholas and Taylor Shipley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and mother and father-in-law, Albrick and Elsie Heimgartner.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hinton, with military honors provided by Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Thursday.
